Aquifer Exemption From SDWA Requirements Allowed
In 1983, Nebraska exempted 3,000 acres of the Basal Chadron aquifer from the state's underground injection control program. The state petitioned the USEPA for approval, as was required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The exemption was sought to permit injection process mining of uranium ore deposits in the aquifer. Initially the USEPA approved an exemption for 6.7 acres as a pilot project. When the project was completed, the USEPA approved the state's request for an exemption of all 3,000 acres.
