BIM and the Predesign Process: Modeling the Unknown
Building information modeling (BIM) technology has reached a level of development that makes it accessible to general practitioners, and yet the nature of its role in architectural design is still ill‐defined and mired in tradition. Traditional approaches to the inclusion of performance information into the early phases of architectural design have involved heuristics like rules of thumb, and with problem. This chapter proposes an approach that also implies a change in the approach to BIM. What is required of a BIM by this approach is that the focus of the modeling process is not on interoperability, but on accurate performance modeling. The extension of this proposed benefit of BIM to the early design process, replacing the rigid and simplistic limits of the rule of thumb, offers the promise that the performance analyst can pose and develop answers to sophisticated design questions, rich in detail and depth.
