Statistical Analysis of Failures of Dikes
This chapter presents a database of 1004 dike failure cases, with information on pre‐breach dike geometry, materials, types of dike, failure mechanisms, breaching length, depth, and peak discharge. Frequent failure mechanisms are also evaluated. The majority of the cases were reported from Hungary, Germany, China, USA, and the Netherlands. The database provides information on the breach location, date, length, depth, and development time; data about the pre‐breach dike geometry (including height, width, slope inclination), dike material, and likely failure mechanism; and additional available records (such as casualties, flooded area, peak outflow). The database distinguishes three different soil materials based on their erosion and strength characteristics: coarse‐grained, fine‐grained, and organic soils. The most frequent failure mechanisms observed in the dike failure dataset are external erosion, internal erosion, slope failure, and embedded structural failures. These failures are defined briefly in the chapter.
