Central Park, New York City
Central Park originated with a design competition of 1857 won by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) and Calvert Vaux (1824–1895), proposing transverse routes that define the principal areas of the Park. The park was completed in 1873, but decline soon set in with neglect and lack of maintenance until repair and replanting after 1934 with a new emphasis on the provision of recreational and sports facilities. In the early 1960s cultural events were introduced, until the Park once again in the 1970s fell into neglect, reversed in 1980 with the foundation of the Central Park Conservancy with major programmes of restoration that finally secured the future of Central Park and removed the threat of renewed cycles of decline.
