Suggested Methods for Determining Selenium in Water
The diaminobenzidine method by Hoste and Gillis, as improved by Cheng, permits the determination of selenite with a sensitivity previously unattainable. Magin and colleagues have suggested a procedure for selenium in water based on this method, but there is no provision for converting the various oxidation states of selenium to selenite. Two methods using diaminobenzidine are presented in this article. The first method involves less time and is preferred in the absence of large amounts of iodide. The second method utilizes the classical bromine distillation to separate selenium.
