Determining the Optimal Distance of Check Dams, Case Study
Shirkuh River, Iran
So far, more than 300 check dams have been constructed in the Shirkuh Basin, Iran. All or some parts of these dams have been buried under sediment. The improper choice of check dams' distances is one of the reasons for it. Yet, no definite equation has been provided to determine the check dams distance and equilibrium bed slope. This research provides an appropriate equation for mountainous rivers to optimize the check dam's distance. Therefore, 65 check dams were selected as samples in which their upstream reach had achieved the equilibrium bed slope to examine the previous and proposed equations. Then, the required data including longitudinal and transverse profiles, sediments samples, and slopes of the reaches between check dams have been gathered. The results revealed that the Heede and Mufich equation is more appropriate due to minimum requirement of data. Four equations were proposed to determine the Heede and Mufich equation's coefficient using field data to reduce the relative mean error of this equation. Finally, the appropriate equation was proposed based on the practical aspects and acceptable error criteria.
