Acid Indexes Indicted
In response to “Effects of Acid Rain on Water Supplies in the Northeast” (Journal AWWA March 1984) by Symons and Taylor, Mr. Schock comments that the calcite saturation index (CSI) is so similar to the Langelier Index that nothing new is being taken into account. Its ability to predict the sensitivity of water to acid loading is questionable on the basis of fundamental aqueous chemistry. None of the indexes used in the article can estimate the amount of calcium carbonate that could be dissolved or deposited. Therefore, there is little advantage in promoting the use of over‐simplified indexes that cannot represent real systems. The authors in turn agree that CSI was not to be considered the answer to all of the problems, but rather the intent was to describe what might be a usable, empirical, or practical system for guidance with moderate costs and manageable logistics.
