Performance Demands at the Whole Building Level
In chapter 3, the important fields, generating performance requirements at the whole building level, are tackled. All starts with the overall comfort building users expect. Then the indoor environmental quality needed to keep building use healthy follows, after which how to make energy use as efficient as economically and from a low carbon perspective doable and necessary is highlighted. Then the scope moves to durability, which means looking to the physical and chemical impact on and degradation of the materials used and structural choices advanced. And of course, building is also an economic reality, whereby the optimum in total or net present value is searched, encompassing as well the construction phase, building use over the period expected and the salvage value at the end of that period. As last field of importance, sustainability as an ever‐enlarging performance issue is tackled, with carbon neutrality as one of the most pressing concerns.
