Fundamentals of Building Performance
This chapter presents the fundamentals of building performance, with a focus on the engineering view where performance expresses how well a building performs a task or function. It explores quantification of performance, which relies on a well‐defined experiment, systematic observation and proper measurement. The chapter also reviews the key terms used to capture performance: performance metrics, performance indicators, and performance measures; it contrasts these terms to terminology from the worlds of management and systems engineering. Aggregation of performance into a higher‐level view is briefly discussed, as are indicators of performance issues.
