Metal Oxide Nanoparticles and Graphene‐Based Nanomaterials
Genotoxic, Oxidative, and Epigenetic Effects
The growing production and use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and the inadequacy of available data on human health risks associated with such compounds make it necessary to implement the knowledge on potential health effects. Although great progress has been made to understand NM toxicity (particularly by in vitro and in vivo animal studies), further reliable studies are necessary to clarify the impact of such materials particularly on genetic material because of possible consequences. This chapter describes the main known mechanisms of genotoxicity and epigenetic effects of NM and discusses the results of the recent and reliable studies on genotoxic, oxidative, and epigenetic effects of some NMs retained at higher health impact for produced quantity, diffusion in consumer products, and number of applications, such as metal oxide (TiO 2 , ZnO, Ag/AgO, CuO, Co 3 O 4 ) and SiO 2 nanoparticles and graphene‐based nanomaterials (GNMs). Available studies evaluating health effects on exposed workers are also described.
