Observations from Experience, Illustrative Examples, and Practical Appendices
This chapter addresses practical examples of real projects. It illustrates the example of a high‐rise tower supported on a general raft whose terrain model is presented with the monitoring of the settlements of the raft over 18 months. The various real‐world cases of works show that the settlements measured are always greater than the predictions made from the calculations, whether determined by analytical or numerical approaches. To make their work in geotechnics more credible, engineers must first critically and carefully analyze the data from the measurements, whether conducted on‐site or in the laboratory, then summarize them and verify them against existing data, to obtain one or more sets of parameters, before carrying out the calculations. In order to provide more meaningful insights into these experiences, the chapter presents the measured and calculated settlements under several real‐world structures, ranging from shallow footings to general rafts, to road and highway embankments.
