Combination of Dual Energy Microfocus Computed Tomography and Petrography for Objective 3D Reservoir Characterization
In this study a dual energy microfocus computed tomography (μCT) methodology is calibrated and tested, in which objective information about density and atomic number of different mineral phases in scanned reservoir plugs (diameter 8 mm) is obtained. In order to validate the technique, thin sections of the plugs are analyzed petrographically and compared to μCT sections. The methodology is tested on a limestone and dolomite reservoir rock of the Khuff Formation (Oman) and the percentages of porosity, calcite, dolomite and anhydrite are calculated. Unlike thin section analysis, this procedure allows quantification of mineral composition in three dimensions and accordingly objective information about the spatial distribution of porosity and mineralogy, as well as their variation throughout the plug, is acquired.
