Extracting Particle Orientations from Three‐dimensional Datasets using BLOB3D
Quantitative analysis of high‐resolution X‐ray computed tomographic (CT) data is a unique and powerful analytical tool for structural geology, as it enables non‐destructive, in‐situ, three‐dimensional examination of thousands of internal features in geo‐materials. Recently‐implemented functionality in BLOB3D, quantitation software for volumetric datasets, permits easy and precise entry of information defining an external reference frame, such as strike‐and‐dip marks, enabling direct comparison of particle orientations to geographic or experimental coordinates recorded in the field or laboratory. This technique was tested on material collected from oriented mineralized sheared veins from the Cripple Creek mining district, southern Colorado. Results from three‐dimensional orientation analyses of individual grains indicate preferred orientations, demonstrating a relationship between growth of gold minerals and structural fabric
