Moment Resistant Joints
This chapter expresses the way on how to characterise the mechanical response of the individual components, covered by Eurocode 3 Part 1‐8 (EN 1993‐1‐8). It addresses the assembly procedure problem successively in terms resistance, stiffness, and deformation capacity. According to the component method approach used in EN 1993‐1‐8, a joint is considered as a set of individual components and the derivation of its design properties relies on a three‐step procedure successively involving: the identification of the basic components, the characterization of the component response, and the assembly of the components. Design rules for bolts in tension have been presented. In fact, they act in joints as parts of T‐stub connections simulating the response of column flanges, cleats or end‐plate in bending. Finally, the chapter discusses the application of the component approach to specific joints: steel beam‐to‐column, beam‐to‐beam and beam splices joint configurations, steel column splices, column bases, and composite joints.
