Visualization Tools and Mock‐ups
As design professionals conceptualize and develop a project, they rely on a number of tools to illustrate their intent and help clients visualize proposed spaces. This chapter discusses the two primary types of mock‐ups used by design professionals: physical and virtual. Physical mock‐ups fall into three categories based on their level of sophistication: simple, detailed, or live. The major benefits of using simple physical mock‐ups are that they are generally less expensive, easier, and faster to construct than detailed or live physical models. Deciding when a physical or virtual mock‐up is the most ideal to use for a particular project depends on the project's goals, budget, and schedule, as well as the availability of virtual‐reality equipment and physical mock‐up space. For many years, mock‐ups and simulations have been used to test concepts in other fields, such as manufacturing, law, medicine, aviation, and the military.
