Water, Sanitation, and Health: Progress and Obstacles to Achieving the SDGs
The importance of water supply and sanitation system is reflected in their inclusion in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The water–sanitation–health nexus reveals a dynamic relationship involving the environmental parameters, socio‐economic and cultural factors, and human health. Nigeria's water resources are unevenly distributed and strongly influenced by rainfall variability, river basin characteristics, and the underlying hydrogeological characteristics. water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) management is located in several institutional bodies with very limited capacity for coordination and cross‐sector collaboration. In Nigeria, for instance, public policy emphasis on sanitation and hygiene is shaped by emergencies, prevailing international norms and targets, example, the MDGs and the sustainable development goals, and depends on the favourable disposition of specific regimes in power. The Sub‐Saharan Africa WASH sector is somehow nested in cultural beliefs and religious values that tend to work against behavioural changes and innovative practices.
