Design at Serviceability Limit State (SLS)
This chapter introduces the concepts of pivots and serviceability limit state (SLS). It starts by explaining the convention with the normal vector orientation. The physics of reinforced concrete beam behavior is discussed with respect to the steel reinforcement density. The limit law for material behavior is explained next, and an electronic example for limit laws in physics (the transistor) is briefly presented. After discussing the limit laws for steel and concrete at SLS, the chapter presents the design of a reinforced concrete section at SLS with both tensile and compression steel reinforcements. It provides examples of bending of reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross‐section. The chapter ends with a discussion on reinforced concrete beams with T‐cross‐section.
