The biggest mistake in cohousing design is that the program is half this long and consequently the community is less than half as functional. This chapter talks about Spokane Cohousing, an intergenerational village that is close to downtown with clustered townhouses and flats to maximize efficiency, interaction, and green space where people share skills and facilities where it makes sense, and respect privacy and independence where it is needed and desired. Several aspects of the Spokane climate suggest specific design responses. The chapter details the efforts the author and team took to create the design of Haystack Heights Cohousing project. It was specific and appropriate to the unique needs and desires of this group, while drawing inspiration from the successful design of other communities.
