Evaluation of Cracking and Spallation of Oxide Scales by Acoustic Emission
This chapter elaborates on the potential of acoustic emission (AE) for identifying oxidation‐related processes such as breakaway oxidation, spallation, and internal cracking. It also discusses the state of the art in AE technology and current research trends in this area. AE comprises of transient mechanical waves spontaneously generated by sudden localized variation in strain within a body. Event energy is an important parameter for oxide scale investigation. Event energy is proportional to the square of the signal amplitude and provides more weightage to higher energy events. AE provides an indispensable tool for investigation of dynamic behavior of materials. AE is most powerful when it is coupled with other characterization techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis or creep testing. Advanced signal processing/analysis concepts such as pattern recognition and signature analysis of different oxide phases and oxidation‐related processes are necessary for exploiting the full potential of AE.
