A Method for Estimating Suffusion Susceptibility of a Compacted Dam Core from Construction Data
This chapter aims to define a general method for creating an estimate ‐ at the structure's scale ‐ of the suffusion susceptibility of soils. The global hydraulic conductivity of the core of a compacted dam is actually a property that reflects the compaction conditions, the progressive phases of construction, and the intrinsic attributes of the borrow pit. The material parameters, notably those of the core, are characterized by a spatial variability that cannot easily be reduced. The suffusion resistance index is a material parameter that characterizes the suffusion susceptibility of a given soil. The chapter provides an estimate of the suffusion susceptibility of each of the lifts used to make up the core of a zoned dam from the construction data and to locate the zones characterized by a relatively higher suffusion potential.
