Wide Flange Brace Bolted to a Gusset Plate in a Concentrically Braced Frame
This chapter evaluates and compares the component‐based finite element method (CBFEM) used in IDEA StatiCa for beam‐column connection in a concentrically braced frame ‐ wide flange braced section bolted to a gusset plate with the AISC 360 provisions. The limit states evaluated are bolt shear at brace to gusset connection, the tension yielding of angles, the tension rupture of angles, the block shear rupture of angles, yielding of splice connecting brace to gusset plate, the rupture of the splice connecting brace to the gusset plate, the block shear of splice connecting brace to the gusset plate, yielding of brace, the rupture of brace, the block shear rupture of the gusset plate, the tension yielding of Whitmore section, the bolt capacity at gusset‐column connection ‐ shear and tension, the bolt capacity at the gusset‐column connection ‐ bolt bearing, prying action on double angles, shear yielding of angles at gusset‐column connection, the shear rupture of angles at the gusset‐column connection, block shear strength at angles at the gusset‐column connection, tension yielding and shear yielding of plate at gusset‐beam connection, the weld between the gusset plate and the beam bottom flange, web local yielding and crippling of beam, the beam‐to‐column connection, the bolt strength, and weld.
