Ageing Factors
Structures change from the day they are fabricated and these changes have to be managed in order to ensure that structures remain sufficiently safe. Examples of these changes may be fatigue, corrosion, material degradation, changes in loads and weight on the structure and how the structure is used. The evaluation of offshore structures is also influenced by societal changes and technological developments. These changes may be grouped into four different types: Physical changes; changes to structural information; changes to knowledge and safety requirements; and technological changes. This chapter illustrates these groups of changes. In some literature, ageing changes are divided into degradation, obsolescence, and organisational. This is unfortunately the most widely used method to describe ageing changes but it lacks many important changes that should be included. The chapter further describes metal loss and wall thinning due to corrosion, cracking due to fatigue, erosion, wear, and tear.
