Smart Water Application Technology: A Water Utility/Irrigation Industry Partnership
The demand management potential of efficient irrigation technology is enormous, and utility managers are realizing that forming partnerships with the landscaping and irrigation industries can help manage water distribution systems with mutual benefits. This article outlines the development of protocols for testing the efficiency of new irrigation technologies under a volunteer initiative called “Smart Water Application Technology.” Sponsored by the Irrigation Association, the initiative has resulted in an accurate, science‐based performance assessment process for “smart” controllers, as well as a robust educational campaign. The purpose of this paper is to help educate water utility professionals about the management potential of efficient irrigation technology and highlight the importance of conducting efficiency testing on new technologies. The secondary purpose is to encourage partnerships between water utilities and the irrigation industry in water resource management.
