This chapter explains the theory behind the design of retaining walls which can be used as walls for basements or stand alone walls. We examine the factors that should be considered under the design and the different approaches of CP2, BS8002 and the more recent Eurocode 7. Examples are provided for each design. We also examine the different types of wall and photographs are provided to illustrate the difference. The chapter also provides an example of how changes in soil conditions can affect the stability of walls.
