The reason why the author wants to deal separately, and in extra detail, with the various certification schemes in this present chapter is that these schemes are, in the main, purely voluntary, with the companies that trade in timber and wood products choosing to take part in them. Membership of the Timber Trade Federation is, of course, entirely voluntary, so it must follow that the Responsible Purchasing Policy scheme is not ‘mandatory’ in the literal sense of the word. Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade is the European Union’s (FLEGT) own way of assessing the legal status of timbers being exported from countries that have been suspected in the past of not following good legal harvesting practices. Malaysian Timber Legality Assurance System grew out of the country’s work on establishing a legality assurance system for itself, as part of its works towards the FLEGT process.
