Potsdamer Platz (Including Leipziger Platz)
As Germany's most prestigious construction project after 1989's fall of the Berlin Wall, the Potsdamer Platz development had the difficult task of reunifying the two parts of Berlin on an essentially vacant site. The redevelopment of Potsdamer Platz and Leipziger Platz is inextricably linked to the fall of the Wall and the subsequent German reunification in 1990. The planning conditions for such an ambitious undertaking, meant to physically reunite the two Germanies in the capital's historical centre, were relatively advantageous because large chunks of land on the western side were already owned by the city. After the reunification, the city also inherited the land that had been nationalised by the Eastern communist state. While the 20‐per‐cent residential use at Potsdamer Platz was initially considered too high a proportion by several of the investors, it is these very elements that have now become the financially most successful of the whole scheme.
