Environmental Control of Data Centers
In recent years, data center facilities have witnessed rapidly increasing power trends that continue to rise at an alarming rate. Numerous research articles, papers, studies, and guidelines have been presented that describe the work done in the area of thermal management of the data centers. This chapter summarizes some of those topics from these articles: (i) The cooling system configuration; (ii) The structural parameters; (iii) The placement of Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units; (iv) The energy management; (v) Data center metrics; (vi) Modeling of data centers; and (vii) Experimental investigations of data center systems. There are number of metrics that are used by data center professionals to measure the effectiveness of system performance. The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is the most commonly used metric, which was defined by the Green Grid as the ratio of total energy consumption of the data center to total energy consumed by IT equipment.
