During a recent study in Ontario, several variables that influence the direct‐filtration process including raw‐water turbidity, diatom concentrations, and mixing were studied. Results indicate that direct filtration can be a viable alternative to conventional sedimentation–filtration systems when the coagulant dosage is < 15 mg/l and the diatom concentration is below 1000 asu/ml.
