Some utilities love National Drinking Water Week and others turn their backs, just like some like eating anchovies and listening to opera and others do not. Two explanations are given for the nonobservers: celebrating Drinking Water Week serves no useful purpose, or the utility might not know how to do the job. The lack of skill can be overcome with the use of the AWWA kit of materials, suggestions and how‐to‐do‐it instructions, and advanced planning and arrangements. The primary purpose of the week is self‐evident–to increase the public's understanding and appreciation of its water service. Experience reveals a secondary benefit: an increase in employee pride. Participation in Drinking Water week is encouraged.
