Operationalising Defensible Space
This chapter looks at how defensible space ideas were operationalised, that is put into practice, within England. It begins by discussing how defensible space was operationalised through the PEP, and then the EAP, showing how both appropriated various elements from the cluster of ideas comprising defensible space. These programmes made early attempts to legitimise resident participation in regeneration, which leads us to reconsider community architecture and the Hunt Thompson Architects remodelling of the Stamford Hill estate. The chapter explores how Design Improvement Controlled Experiment (DICE) played out in London estates. It also explores Colemanisation from two standpoints, the academe and practice, revealing the divergent aims and ways of intervening. The chapter discusses the seven DICE schemes in general and then examines two of the estates in detail (the Rogers Estate in Bethnal Green and the Ranwell Estate in Bow, Tower Hamlets), focusing on the micro‐practices that played out during these major reconstruction projects.
