Automatic Sprinkler Suppression
The automatic sprinkler system has had an outstanding record of success in controlling or extinguishing unwanted fires. Observation of an automatic sprinkler system in a building often conveys such great confidence for fire safety that a performance examination may become cursory or careless. Qualitative observations identify features that reduce sprinkler system effectiveness. A trained eye can recognize the features that lead to less effective fire control. Calculations can augment this information with quantitative measures. Together, these two aspects of the fire and the system give a better picture of sprinkler control expectations. This chapter discusses these concepts of automatic sprinkler suppression in detail. A water flow analysis determines the quantity, pressure, and duration of water for the number of open sprinklers selected for evaluation. Given that water discharges from an open sprinkler (AA), an evaluation looks at the system's operational effectiveness (AC). Operational effectiveness examines the interaction of the diagnostic fire and sprinkler water discharge.
