Contact‐Point Response for Modal Identification of Bridges
This chapter outlines the potential of using the contact‐point response to identify the modal parameters of the bridge theoretically. To verify this, it presents the finite element simulation. By assembling the vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI) element (with sprung mass) and the conventional beam elements for the parts of the bridge not directly acted on by the sprung mass, one can obtain the global finite element equation for the VBI system at time. The contact‐point response is a better measure than the vehicle response for retrieving the bridge frequencies, especially those of higher orders. The mode shapes of a bridge are important parameters for damage detection of the bridge. The chapter explains the contact‐point response to construct the mode shape of a bridge compared with the vehicle response. It presents the procedure for constructing the mode shapes of a bridge using the acceleration data recorded or computed of the vehicle during its passage over the bridge.
