Use of Acoustic Emission for Ceramic Matrix Composites
Damage mechanisms in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) such as matrix cracks and fiber breaks emit sounds when they occur making acoustic emission (AE), an ideal technique for damage detection and monitoring. The use of AE for CMCs has been somewhat lacking in the past; however, as computer technology and familiarity have increased so has the usefulness of AE. In this work, some of the ways AE has been implemented for CMC research are described for both detection of damage and quantification of damage, as well as life prediction at room and elevated temperatures.
