The most successful leaders build strong cultures of collaboration that enable design teams to effectively co‐create together. In this chapter, the authors talk about personal leadership values and the importance of consistently adhering to them, regardless of circumstance. They include: integrity and trust, equity and inclusion, communication biomimicry, servant leadership, informed optimism, and the wild card. When measured across a career, the efforts and impacts of the most talented design leaders can be diluted, if not compromised, if they are not built upon a foundation of strong personal values. They are essential to nourish and grow collaborative ecosystems of talent. Personal integrity is a key ingredient of trusted relationships. Trust, in turn, is required to achieve creative team collaboration and design innovation. The notion of servant leadership can be challenging for those who confuse management with leadership.
