Over the years quantity surveyors, have developed conventions, or methods of working, that bring order, consistency, clarity and auditability to the measurement process. The essential discipline for competent measurement is following the correct order for entering the dimensions so that it is easy to audit where the quantities have come from. In modern quantity surveying, traditional conventions are still respected but different ways of working are now necessary as quantity surveyors frequently work with measurement software in a variety of media such as 2D and 3D CAD, PDF files, 3D models and BIM models.
