Finite Elements Overview
Numerical methods like the Finite Element Method (FEM) are outstanding as an engineering tool but have to be embedded in a larger frame of modeling. Discretization is a key therein whereby an infinite number of unknowns is reduced to a finite number. On the one hand this bases on cornerstones of structural analysis like equilibrium, kinematic compatibility and material behavior, on the other hand methods of numerical mathematics have to be used to reach solutions. An overview is given in this chapter as far it is necessary for the application to structural concrete.
