Historical Issues in Landscape Architecture Representation
Landscape painting established itself as a genre in the 17th century, notably with the work of Claude Lorrain (1600–1682), but also with that of Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) and Salvator Rosa (1615–1673). A knowledge of landscape representations that emerged from painting is therefore necessary to our understanding of the design of real landscapes. Two historical forms of landscape representation, the theatre in the garden and the trompe l'oeil, illustrate the concept of the representation of landscape within a physical designed landscape. Before examining them, however, the first thing to mention is that all representation is a simulacrum. The issue of time in landscape has also been addressed by using drawing or photography to depict a site at two dramatically different times of day. This approach is used when evaluating a location and its characteristics.
