Persia (including Khūzestān)
The mountainous Fars province offers the majority of the Achaemenid monuments so far known, Pasargadae erected by Cyrus in the mid‐sixth century BCE and Persepolis‐Parsa, the residence of Darius, founded 30 years later. The major buildings of both were excavated in the twentieth century and the whole settlements are under fieldwork study. Darius also built a large residence in the lowlands at Susa onto a 3000‐year‐old capital, excavated during a long time. Recent discoveries inform us about smaller stone pavilions and residences in various areas and about common settlements of the Achaemenid period gradually coming to light.
