Strengthening the Surface Water Treatment Rule
Changes to the current Surface Water Treatment Rule will likely affect water utility compliance with the new Disinfection‐Disinfection Byproducts Rule. As a result, the reg‐neg committee agreed that the USEPA would propose an interim “enhanced” Surface Water Treatment Rule that would include a wide range of regulatory options. The interim and final rule would be developed so that it would be effective at the same time that systems would be required to comply with the D‐DBP rule. The enhanced surface water rule would regulate cryptosporidium, modify criteria for avoiding filtration, allow alternative filtration technologies, require routine sanitary surveys, and may increase treatment requirements.
