Green and Blue Infrastructure – Vegetated Systems
Green and blue infrastructure (GBI) improves urban ecosystem health increasing the resilience to stress for urban residents and counteracting habitat fragmentation. GBI also provides several environmental benefits contributing to climate change mitigation; air quality enhancement; water cycle re‐naturalisation; soil improvement; biodiversity increase; and economic and social advantages. Vegetated infrastructure systems include rain gardens, infiltration basins, ponds and wetlands. Vegetation performs a number of hydrologic functions including canopy interception, evapotranspiration, hydraulic lift/redistribution, soil infiltration, groundwater recharge, and pollutant filtering. It can reduce overflow and flood risk, improving water quality and biodiversity. GBI may include greenways and spaces incorporating components to mitigate environmental impacts associated with stormwater runoff.
