Structural analysis and design for fire conditions is the most advanced component of holistic fire safety performance. And yet structural applications are rarely used in building design. The problem may be more cultural than technical. This chapter discusses traditional regulatory practices to provide a context for calculation‐based structural design for fire conditions, providing a bridge between traditional practices and performance‐based calculations. It first describes elements of building construction and gives an overview of fire behavior for common construction materials. It then discusses aspects of the built environment and fire endurance in building codes and describes the standard fire endurance test and interpretations of results. Next, the chapter discusses relationships of fire endurance testing and room fires. Finally, it summarizes the traditional building code treatment of structural fire requirements in a context of modern structural calculation methods.
