Sustainable Drainage Systems
Delivering Multiple Benefits for People and Wildlife
In river basin management planning, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are seen as valuable tools in achieving compliance with Water Framework Directive (WFD) objectives. SuDS seek to manage rainfall in ways that mimic natural processes by using the landscape to control the flow and volume of surface water, to prevent or reduce pollution downstream of development and to promote recharging of groundwater resources. Specifically, using SuDS will achieve the following: reduce pollution, attenuate flooding, and support low flows in streams and rivers. SuDS habitats will benefit plants, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, both in the devices themselves and also indirectly in receiving watercourses through improvements to water quality and by controlled discharge of surface water. This chapter realises these benefits depends on adherence, to some simple design principles. It also presents a case study of Springhill Cohousing, Stroud, and Gloucestershire for SuDS design.
