Passive thermal controls seek to minimize cooling and heating loads with a minimum of mechanical systems. Moreover, passive cooling and heating are potentially "free," in that much of the relevant strategies can be achieved by appropriate configuration of the building without recourse to expensive or exotic technologies. This chapter considers strategies and techniques in the use of BIM that contribute to energy efficient buildings. For both hot‐dry and hot‐moist conditions, natural ventilation is fundamental to passive cooling. Accurately predicting rate of airflow due to the stack effect is problematic, as a rising warm air mass represents a complex system involving interrelated mass transfer and heat transfer. The roof pond relies on direct radiation to the sky to complete a heat transfer cycle. Roof ponds may be used to help cool buildings in the summer as well as heat them in the winter.
