Safety versus Work and Work versus Safety
The way we talk about safety often positions it as an entity, something that can be set apart from the more important business of production, which of course has significant consequences for practice. Some of the historic arguments around legislation from the industrial revolution still appear today – that safety is inherently a barrier to efficient and effective production – but more contemporarily that our methods of production are in turn a barrier to safety. Conflict and inconsistency between these values can often be found on sites, rooted in the way we organise our work, and as safety also becomes ever more bundled up with health, environmental issues, quality and other trappings of corporate social responsibility, this all serves to create a complicated and indeed challenging context for safety management on sites.
