Architectures
Buildings are three‐dimensional, material, and haptic objects whose qualities have frequently escaped visual culture's traditional focus on two‐dimensional, optical perception. A visual culture that draws on new materialism—specifically, on its expanded cast of subjects (including substances, processes, non‐human species, as well as diverse humans) and on attention to affect and agency—might offer a richer, more ecological and politicized understanding of architecture. Using two Arts and Crafts houses by the architects Greene & Greene as case studies, the chapter proposes that tracing the materials in such buildings can make visible the complex imperial networks and ecologies in which turn‐of‐the‐century architecture was enmeshed.
