Mechanics of Overtopping Erosion of Dams
Overtopping erosion of dams is one of the most common causes of dam failure. The overtopping erosion process is often a progressive surface erosion process (sediment transport in dispersed particles) for non‐cohesive embankments, and a headcut erosion process (formation and migration of a vertical or nearly vertical drop on the bed) for cohesive embankments. This chapter first presents the mechanics of surface erosion, and then introduces the methods of characterizing soil erodibility. Incipient motion refers to the initiation of surface erosion. The chapter presents the erosion mechanisms for granular soils and cohesive soils. Soil erodibility can be described by two parameters: critical erosive shear stress and coefficient of erodibility. The critical erosive shear stress reflects the ease of initiation of erosion in the soil, while the coefficient of erodibility represents how fast the soil erodes. Finally, chapter summarizes the characteristics of dam failure due to overtopping erosion.
