Snagging Funding for Security, Emergency Response, and Resiliency Projects
This article discusses the Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP), the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS's) primary funding mechanism for building and sustaining national preparedness capabilities. Water and wastewater utilities are eligible for these grants because they are recognized as critical infrastructure and first responders. HSGP includes a number of subprograms, three of which can benefit the water sector and are discussed in this article. These are the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP), the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI), and the Buffer Zone Protection Program (BZPP). The article provides contact information and seven pointers for applying for federal grant monies.
