Heritage Under Fire
Lessons from Iraq for Cultural Property Protection
Since the invasion of 2003, Iraq has not only suffered a devastating period of horrific violence and a large number of civilian casualties, it has also seen unprecedented damage done to some of the world's most sensitive historical and heritage sites. This chapter begins with a discussion of the impact of the war and subsequent occupation (2003 to 2011) on Iraq's heritage, documenting the most significant and devastating instances of heritage damage and destruction that occurred. Moving forward, the chapter discusses the grave challenges facing Iraqi heritage beyond US withdrawal in the forms of development, neglect, continued hostilities, and inexpert and haphazard excavation, preservation, protection, and restoration. Despite this troubling scenario, the chapter also examines the extent to which the Iraq conflict was a turning point for major Western military operations and the development of Cultural Property Protection programs that aim to better prepare military personnel for protecting heritage sites in future conflicts.
