Science and Craft in Understanding Historic Gardens and Their Management
This chapter considers that the processes of gardening should not be over intellectualised. In the main, husbandry is a series of simple operations guided by an understanding of local conditions and the specific plants being cultivated. A rich European literature provides excellent insights into past approaches to cultivation.
This chapter discusses the difficulty of deciding the degree to which historic gardens and landscapes should be managed using the techniques and equipment of their period and period correct plants selected. It discusses the problem of the current shortage of finance but emphasises that there are many examples of old skills having been successfully re‐learned by today's gardeners.
