THE NEW PARADIGM OF URBAN WATER, ENERGY, AND RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
The new paradigm for water, stormwater, energy, and solids offers a promise of adequate amounts of clean water for all beneficial uses and avoids adverse effects on present and future resources, the environment, and climatic conditions. Water, ecological resources, carbon/energy, and economic sustainability footprints are all linked in an expression of urban metabolism. Folke et al. and Leichenko identified the following categories of urban resilience: infrastructure and hazard and disaster (engineering) resilience, ecological resilience, economic resilience, and governances or social resilience. A study by the Stockholm Resilience Center, the University of Copenhagen, Australian National University, and the Potsdam Institute for Climate published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that there is evidence that the Earth is progressing to a planetary threshold that could push the Earth system toward an irreversible “Hothouse Earth.”
